An 11-year-old boy tragically passed away from a severe case of the flu before having the chance to unwrap his Christmas gifts. Jace Watkins lost his battle with the flu on December 27 after being rushed to the hospital in critical condition following a seizure on December 20.
Despite no underlying health issues, Jace, who was born prematurely and used inhalers in the past, was placed on a ventilator with uncertain brain activity. His aunt mentioned that he had seemed fine before suddenly experiencing vomiting and a seizure.
Community support poured in through a GoFundMe campaign, surpassing the initial goal of $5,000 and raising over $9,800 to help cover medical expenses. The fundraiser remains open to aid with medical bills and funeral costs for Jace.
Hueytown Intermediate School mourned the loss of the fifth-grader, describing him as a shining light with a warm smile that will be dearly missed. A prayer vigil was held for Jace as he fought for his life in the ICU due to severe flu complications.
During the 2023-2024 flu season, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported approximately 28,000 flu-related deaths, with the majority affecting older adults.
