“500,000 Households to Receive £25 Cold Weather Payments”

Share

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in nearly 250 postcode areas across England and Wales. This move follows the issuance of winter weather warnings by the Met Office for the upcoming week. Approximately 500,000 households are set to benefit from the payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating expenses.

The payments have been initiated in a total of 246 postcode regions, including locations such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, as well as parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. Eligible households in these areas will automatically receive the financial support.

In the current winter season, 697 postcode areas have received the £25 payments, with 18 districts receiving two payments due to an extended period of cold weather. The latest round of payments is estimated to reach around 532,000 households, with Greater Manchester alone accounting for approximately 336,000 recipients. The total expenditure on Cold Weather Payments triggered today is expected to amount to £13.3 million.

Cold Weather Payments are disbursed to individuals in England and Wales who are beneficiaries of various government support schemes. A similar program operates in Northern Ireland, while in Scotland, heating bill assistance is provided throughout the winter season without being tied to specific cold weather spells.

For England and Wales, the trigger for a payment is set when an area is forecasted to experience seven consecutive days of subzero temperatures. Weather experts are anticipating a cold spell leading up to the New Year, with below-freezing temperatures anticipated across many regions.

Approximately 3.9 million individuals are eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million of them currently receiving Pensions Credit. The benefits that may make individuals eligible for the payments include Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest.

Not all recipients of these benefits will automatically qualify for Cold Weather Payments, as eligibility is subject to specific criteria. Detailed information on eligibility can be found on the GOV.UK website. The £25 payments are deposited directly into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, with a payment reference containing the individual’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. No application is required to receive this financial assistance.
