“Mount Etna Erupts Dramatically, Covering Snow in Ash and Lava”

Share

A dramatic eruption of Mount Etna, covered in snow, has occurred, sending ash and lava high into the air. The volcano, located in Catania, Italy, known for its ties to the Roman god Vulcan in ancient mythology, started spewing lava following a period of increased geological unrest.

During the eruption, lava fountains rose up to 400 meters (1,312 feet) and a dense ash column formed, with a new vent opening on the eastern side of the Voragine Crater, which remains active. Even as skiers were seen on the slopes below, massive ash clouds billowed behind them.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported that volcanic activity at Mount Etna, which has erupted frequently in recent years, has escalated, necessitating careful monitoring. Catania International Airport is on red alert due to potential changes in volcanic behavior and ash emissions, although flight operations are continuing as usual.

The recent eruption is visible from miles away, and despite the ash clouds, skiers are still flocking to the popular winter sports destination. The contrast between the flowing lava and the snow is a striking sight. The significant ash clouds have led to the heightened alert status of nearby Catania International Airport. Scientists have emphasized the need for continuous monitoring of the renowned volcano in Catania, Italy, for any further developments. Aerial images from August show lava streaming from Mount Etna.
