Six individuals, including a two-year-old child, lost their lives following an attack by armed assailants at a popular tourist destination. The tragic incident occurred in the serene coastal town of Puerto Lopez in the southwest region of Ecuador, known for its allure to vacationers. The perpetrators, armed men, unleashed gunfire in a public setting, resulting in six fatalities and three injuries, as disclosed by police commander Colonel William Acurio.

The assault transpired on a Sunday morning around 9 am, with the assailants fleeing the scene before law enforcement arrived, no arrests have been made yet. Investigators have attributed the heinous act to a conflict between organized crime factions active in the area. The gunmen, equipped with automatic firearms, targeted a group of individuals in the coastal town, renowned for its whale-watching opportunities in Ecuador’s Manabi province.

This incident is part of a surge in violence that has engulfed the region recently, with Ecuador serving as a buffer between Colombia and Peru, the world’s top cocaine exporters. The country has experienced an escalation in gang-related violence in connection with Mexican and Colombian drug cartels. The escalating violence has infiltrated the once-tranquil beach town, a hotspot for whale-watching and a mecca for both local and international tourists, with a spate of killings over the weekend resulting in at least nine casualties from separate incidents.

Ecuador has been rattled by violence linked to drug trafficking routes and gang rivalries in recent years, leading to an upsurge in homicides nationwide. In a separate incident in December, former Ecuadorian footballer Mario Pineida, 33, fell victim to an assault in Guayaquil, the nation’s largest city. According to the Geneva-based Organised Crime Observatory, Ecuador is on course to conclude the year with a record homicide rate of 52 per 100,000 residents.
