An expectant mother in Washington survived a terrifying assault in 2009 when a near-stranger attempted to forcibly take her unborn child. Teka Adams, who had met the assailant, Veronica Deramous, at a local homeless shelter, was invited to Deramous’s home for what appeared to be a regular visit. However, the visit turned into a nightmare when Deramous brutally attacked Teka, trying to remove the baby from her womb with a box cutter. Despite sustaining critical injuries, Teka managed to escape, holding her wounded abdomen and intestines while protecting her baby.
Following the assault, Teka underwent an emergency C-section at the hospital, saving both her and her child. She named her daughter Miracle to signify the extraordinary odds they overcame. Deramous was arrested on the same day and charged with attempted murder. During the court proceedings in 2010, Teka courageously testified about the attack, emphasizing that had she not escaped, both she and her child would have perished. Her escape, where she held her intestines while fleeing, showcased her bravery and determination to survive.
In court, Teka directly addressed Deramous, holding Miracle up for all to see, expressing both relief and anger towards her assailant for endangering their lives. Deramous offered a different account, claiming that Teka had wanted an abortion and had willingly come to her home to give birth. Despite her claims, the prosecution presented compelling evidence against Deramous. Eventually, Deramous pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and false imprisonment, receiving a 25-year prison sentence with a portion suspended.
Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Carrington, who prosecuted the case, highlighted Deramous’s dishonesty and expressed satisfaction with the outcome for the victim and the community.
