“Beware: Scammers Targeting Phones with Fake Texts”

Share

Fraudsters are continuously devising new methods to deceive people, and the most recent danger seems to be originating from regular text messages. Recent research conducted by security experts at Malwarebytes reveals a significant increase in fake conversations being sent to smartphones.

These deceptive messages often begin with a simple ‘Hello’ or imply prior acquaintance with the recipient. For instance, one message identified by Malwarebytes states, “Hi, I noticed your contact details in my phone, can you remind me where we previously interacted.”

The primary objective of these fraudulent messages is to establish a connection and extract personal information, which can then be exploited for data theft, as reported by the Express. Once a recipient responds, scammers initiate a seemingly friendly chat, aiming to eventually build trust and potentially lead to romance or investment scams, according to Malwarebytes. Despite sounding unbelievable, these schemes have proven to be remarkably successful.

One notorious tactic involves the “Hi mum” ploy, where scammers pretend to be a distressed family member, resulting in substantial amounts of money being transferred to cybercriminals in the UK alone.

It is now imperative for iPhone and Android users to exercise caution, refrain from replying, and avoid clicking on any links sent by unknown senders. Malwarebytes warns that responding to these messages confirms the validity of your number, making you a target for further exploitation or sharing of your contact information.

If you receive a suspicious message, here are some simple guidelines to follow to protect yourself.
