“UK Phases Out 3G Service, Impacts Older Users”

Share

A significant shift is occurring this year that may impact access to data on certain devices. The UK is phasing out its 3G service in favor of faster and more reliable 4G and 5G networks. Major UK providers like EE, Vodafone, and now O2 have already discontinued their 3G services.

Although most users won’t be affected, some older and more vulnerable individuals may face disruptions if their devices are not upgraded. This poses a concern as many rely on their phones to stay connected with loved ones.

In response to this transition, Virgin Media O2 is collaborating with Age UK to raise awareness about the 3G shutdown. Age UK’s Charity Director, Caroline Abrahams, emphasized the importance of supporting those impacted by the switch-off.

O2 is set to complete the shutdown of its 3G signal by the year-end, potentially affecting users with non-4G or 5G compatible devices like WhatsApp users. The closure has already begun in select areas, with more locations scheduled for the switch-off.

Virgin Media O2 and Age UK are teaming up to provide assistance to older users who need to upgrade their devices to continue using mobile data post the 3G phase-out. Information campaigns and support services will be offered to help affected individuals and their families understand and adapt to the changes.

These services will extend to customers of providers such as Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, and Sky Mobile, who operate on the O2 network. Virgin Media O2 will reach out directly to customers without 4G or 5G handsets, offering free compatible devices to vulnerable customers and discounts to others.

For users with 3G-only phones, fallback to 2G networks will still enable voice calls and text messages post the 3G switch-off. The impact of this transition is expected to be minimal, as Virgin Media O2 reports that less than 2% of network data is carried on the 3G network.

Individuals concerned about the change can seek support from their service providers or contact Age UK’s Advice Line for assistance. It is crucial to ensure readiness for the switch-off and explore available options for a seamless transition.
