UK Boxing Day Fox Hunts Face Looming Ban

Share

The traditional Boxing Day hunt occurred this morning in the UK, where riders gathered to engage in the contentious activity shortly after a Labour report unveiled the government’s intention to outlaw fox hunting completely.

Across England, Boxing Day hunts unfolded this morning as numerous riders ventured out under the early sunlight accompanied by their dogs to follow a pre-laid scent trail. Participants asserted that the activity promoted both physical and mental well-being without causing harm to animals. Notably, hunting advocate Nigel Farage was observed observing a hunt at Chiddingstone Castle in Kent.

However, amidst the hunters, dissenting voices emerged, contending that the practice is a guise for engaging in unlawful acts targeting innocent animals. This perspective is aligned with the stance of the Labour party, as indicated in its animal welfare strategy released on Monday.

Fox hunting has been prohibited in all four UK nations for two decades, following the ban imposed during Tony Blair’s tenure to curb what was perceived as a cruel practice involving horseback riders and packs of dogs hunting and killing foxes. Despite the general ban, certain exemptions have persisted, permitting hunters to engage in “trail hunting” using a scent trail devoid of live foxes.

Critics argue that trail hunting permissions are exploited to bypass the 2005 law, with Labour characterizing it as a cover for brutal killings in its manifesto. Emma Judd from the League Against Cruel Sports highlighted that actual trail laying is infrequent and can lead to the unintended killing of wildlife, including livestock, due to the proximity of the trails to areas where animals are situated.

Hunters defend the activity as a means for socializing and enjoyment, while recent hunts are likely to be among the final outings. Nigel Farage’s staunch support for hunting in the UK is well-known, and hunters have been utilizing existing permissions to continue pursuing foxes. Critics and protesters opposing fox hunting were present at various hunting events nationwide today. Labour’s proposed measures aim to close all existing hunting loopholes, with concerns also raised about the adverse impact on the hounds involved in these activities.
