“UK Faces Storm Goretti Chaos: Power Outages, Travel Disruption”

Share

Tens of thousands of UK residents are grappling with extensive power outages, disrupted travel, and school closures amid nationwide weather alerts for snow and ice.

Due to Storm Goretti, airports have grounded numerous flights, including those from London Heathrow and Birmingham, as the adverse weather conditions persist.

The recent wintry conditions brought about 99mph winds and a rare red warning for stormy winds in the South West. The Met Office has highlighted ongoing issues caused by Storm Goretti, with a mix of rain, sleet, and snow affecting various regions.

The Met Office forecasts a return to near-average temperatures across most parts of the country next week, with unsettled weather likely due to low-pressure systems.

As snow covered parts of the West Midlands, residents were surprised by a pink sky glow, attributed to LED pitch lights at Birmingham City’s football ground, as confirmed by Hednesford Town Football Club.

Explaining the phenomenon, a Met Office spokesman noted that snow can intensify pink colors due to the scattering of blue light, allowing longer wavelengths like red and orange to be more prominent.

Additionally, the Met Office has issued a long-range weather forecast, predicting changeable and occasionally unsettled conditions with rainfall and possible strong winds across the UK.

Further snowfall is expected on Sunday, with warnings for snow and ice in Scotland and northern England. The warnings highlight potential disruptions to travel, including delays and cancellations for rail, air, and bus services.

At present, thousands of properties in various regions are without power, with significant damage reported on St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall following Storm Goretti’s impact.

The Met Office continues to monitor the situation, emphasizing potential icy stretches and further weather challenges, urging caution and preparedness for affected areas.
