A close friend reported that a swimmer who went missing on Christmas Day at a Devon beach had ventured into the water to assist a distressed woman but was swept away by a large wave before reaching safety. Matthew Upham, 63, remains unaccounted for following a rescue operation in Budleigh Salterton where several individuals faced difficulties while swimming in rough waters. While many were rescued and attended to by medical personnel, Upham and another man in his 40s are still unlocated.

The friend, who has known Upham for three decades, described him as extremely fit and a regular sea swimmer. Upham’s selfless nature led him to attempt a rescue mission when he noticed the woman in distress. Despite his swimming prowess, a powerful wave struck him as he tried to reach her, causing him to disappear beneath the water.

According to the friend, Upham was on the brink of safety near the shore before turning back to aid the struggling woman. The friend emphasized Upham’s bravery and emphasized that he willingly put himself at risk to help others, highlighting his strong swimming skills and familiarity with the coastal area.

In a statement on Upham’s business Instagram account, his nephew expressed the family’s devastation at his disappearance and thanked the emergency services, particularly the RNLI and coastguard, for their efforts. The family requested privacy as they mourned and appreciated the outpouring of support and condolences.

A commenter described Upham as a kind-hearted individual, with others praising his positive influence and joyful nature. Upham ran an antique business in Budleigh Salterton, specializing in European chandeliers and 18th-century furniture, after operating in London for forty years before relocating to the seaside town.
