“Trump Orders Military Action in Venezuela”

Share

The recent military action ordered by Donald Trump in Caracas, Venezuela, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the United States and the Latin American nation. Trump has consistently accused Venezuela of drug trafficking, and in 2020, President Nicolas Maduro was charged with narco-terrorism in the US.

The US does not recognize Maduro as the legitimate leader of Venezuela and had put up a $50 million reward for his capture before the recent events. The Trump administration is likely to argue that these actions do not require congressional approval, citing reasons such as pursuing Maduro as the leader of an international drug cartel rather than engaging in an act of war.

In a statement to the New York Times, Trump declined to confirm if he had consulted Congress prior to the military strikes. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s remarks on social media suggest that the US does not view these actions as acts of war needing congressional authorization. Rubio emphasized that Maduro is not the rightful president of Venezuela but the head of a narco-terror organization.

Republican Senator Mike Lee indicated that the military operation was conducted to protect those executing the arrest warrant and falls within the president’s authority under Article II of the Constitution. However, the justification for US arrest warrants in a foreign country remains unclear.

Apart from the drug-related accusations, Trump’s interest in Venezuela also stems from his desire for regime change. Maduro’s authoritarian rule and leftist stance clash with Trump’s objectives. Additionally, Venezuela’s significant oil reserves, controlled by the state-run PDVSA, present an opportunity for US oil companies, many of which have supported Trump financially, to access the vast oil resources.

Trump’s actions in Venezuela align with his efforts to exert influence in Latin America and shape the region according to his administration’s priorities, which have been evident in his interactions with various leaders across the continent.
