Fodor’s 2026 ‘No List’ Reveals 7 Tourist Hotspots to Avoid

British tourists are advised to steer clear of seven destinations this year. Traveling, while enjoyable, can have negative consequences if not done responsibly. Issues like overcrowding, strained public transport, soaring housing costs, and environmental impacts from flying make global travel in 2026 challenging without leaving a significant footprint.

Fodor’s, an American travel publication, annually compiles a ‘red list’ of destinations that should be avoided due to unsustainable tourism practices. The list aims to draw attention to places where tourism is putting excessive strain on the environment and local communities. It serves as a gentle reminder to give these locations a break for the time being.

One destination to avoid is Isola Sacra, a coastal area near Rome known for its ancient Roman Necropolis. The region, with around 15,000 residents, has become a popular tourist spot due to its proximity to Rome Fiumicino Airport and picturesque coastline. Plans for a massive port called Fiumicino Waterfront have stirred controversy and led to its inclusion on Fodor’s 2026 No List.

Another troubled spot is the Canary Islands, a beloved winter sun destination for Brits. With nearly 18 million visitors last year, the islands have faced issues ranging from overtourism protests to airport delays. Concerns about the negative impact of tourism have been highlighted by locals marching under the banner “Canarias tiene un límite” (The Canaries have a limit).

Antarctica, known for its pristine environment, is facing challenges as tourism increases. Efforts to protect the continent’s fragile ecosystem have led to strict rules for visitors, such as staying a safe distance from wildlife. However, the rising number of tourists poses a threat to Antarctica’s delicate balance.

Glacier National Park in the US is experiencing accelerated glacier melt, with only a fraction of its glaciers remaining. This has led to a surge in last-chance tourism, causing congestion, littering, and disturbances to wildlife in the park.

Jungfrau in Switzerland, renowned for its Alpine beauty, is struggling to balance tourism with environmental preservation. The region’s popularity has strained resources and disrupted the lives of locals, prompting concerns about sustainability.

Mexico City has seen protests against gentrification and rising rents, with tensions escalating between locals and foreign tourists. The city’s tourism industry is facing backlash, reflecting a broader trend of anti-tourism sentiment in some regions.

Kenya’s tourism industry has boomed post-Covid, with a significant increase in international arrivals. The coastal city of Mombasa is particularly at risk due to overtourism, leading to depleted resources, overcrowding, and environmental degradation. Efforts are needed to address these challenges and ensure sustainable tourism practices in the country.
