“Luke Donald Considers Ryder Cup Captaincy Hat-Trick”

Luke Donald is set to discuss the possibility of becoming the Ryder Cup captain for the third time in 2027 with the DP World Tour in Dubai this week. Shane Lowry, the hero at Bethpage Black, has encouraged Donald to continue leading the team in Ireland.

The former world No.1 led Europe to a remarkable victory in Long Island in September, following their win in Rome in 2021. No European captain has achieved a third win, with only Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher having led the team more than twice.

Donald, aged 48, is participating in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic this week, marking his first event of the year. He plans to discuss the Ryder Cup captaincy with Guy Kinnings, the chief executive of DP World, as Europe is expected to make a decision in the coming months.

“I will have a discussion with Guy this week to assess the situation,” said Donald. “While I have an idea of the responsibilities involved, I want to understand their expectations. I have a few months to decide, with the announcement typically made in March. It involves additional work at home, considering factors like control and travel since I reside in the US. I need to evaluate the requirements and weigh the pros and cons before committing fully.”

Reflecting on the Ryder Cup, Lowry, ranked 26th in the world, believes the captaincy should go to Donald if he desires it. Lowry highlighted the significance of potentially achieving a historic third consecutive win and the importance of continuity for the upcoming event at Adare Manor in Ireland.

Ultimately, the decision lies with Donald, considering the substantial commitment it entails, including extensive travel and planning for a home Ryder Cup. Feedback from fellow players like Rory McIlroy, Shane, and Matt Fitzpatrick has been positive, indicating their support for Donald’s potential return as captain.

If Donald opts against leading the team again, Vice-captain options could include Francesco Molinari or Justin Rose.
