“Mexico City Shaken: 6.5 Earthquake Near Acapulco”

Share

A powerful earthquake recently shook Mexico, including its capital, Mexico City. The quake, measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale, originated near San Marcos, close to the popular coastal destination of Acapulco. Following the main tremor, over 150 aftershocks have been recorded.

During President Claudia Sheinbaum’s first press briefing of the year, the seismic alarms abruptly interrupted the event. Residents in the area, like José Raymundo Díaz Taboada, living near Acapulco, described hearing a loud rumbling noise and feeling strong tremors. Despite the intensity, Taboada noted that this earthquake was milder compared to previous experiences.

Communication disruptions were reported in the region, hindering contact with individuals living southeast of Acapulco. The Mexican Seismic Alert System (SASMEX) provided a 68-second warning for Mexico City residents but only a brief 9-second notice for those closer to the epicenter in Acapulco.

In the aftermath, reports emerged of a landslide on the Acapulco-Zihuatanejo highway, prompting officials to caution travelers in the affected area. While Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado assured minimal damage in Michoacán, residents in multiple states, including Veracruz, Jalisco, and Tabasco, also felt the quake’s impact.

The earthquake struck around 7:58 am local time, leading to widespread panic and power outages in some regions. President Sheinbaum’s press conference faced a sudden halt due to the alarms, as minor damages were reported across affected areas. Videos circulating on social media depicted buildings shaking and debris falling, underscoring the quake’s intensity.

As more information unfolds, the US Geological Survey confirmed the quake’s depth and location, emphasizing the seismic activity’s significant impact on the region. Despite the disruptions and uncertainties, officials urged vigilance and adherence to safety protocols following the earthquake.

This seismic event serves as a stark reminder of Mexico’s susceptibility to natural disasters, highlighting the importance of preparedness and swift response measures.
