A former renowned jockey, Luke Tarrant, has been detained on three charges related to armed robbery. Tarrant, who is currently serving a 12-month racing disqualification for a separate offense, was denied bail during his appearance before magistrates in Caloundra, Queensland, Australia, last week.

The charges against Tarrant include three counts of armed robbery, entering premises with intent to commit a serious offense, and possession of dangerous drugs, as reported by Racenet.com. The crime of robbery carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison, which can escalate to a life sentence for cases involving armed robbery, collaboration with others, or the use of personal violence.

Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on March 19.

The 31-year-old Tarrant, who last participated in a race in August, has achieved success with 502 wins, including three Group race victories. His notable accomplishment was in 2015 when he triumphed in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

In recent history, Tarrant faced a six-month ban in 2020 after admitting to headbutting a fellow jockey in the weighing room. Additionally, in October of the previous year, he was disqualified for one year for declining to cooperate with a stewards’ inquiry into alleged falsification of health assessment forms utilized for licensing purposes.

The matter was referred to Queensland’s Racing Integrity Commission, where Tarrant, aged 31, was instructed to enter a plea. However, he failed to respond within four weeks.

In a statement, the Commission panel expressed concern over Tarrant’s lack of cooperation, emphasizing the importance of licensed individuals assisting inquiries and complying with evidence requests. Consequently, Tarrant received a 12-month disqualification starting from October 8, 2025, until October 8, 2026, as deemed necessary by the stewards.
