A mother, Emma Devon, shared a cautionary tale with parents after her baby almost lost a toe due to a hair becoming entangled in her sock. Emma, 32, of Cumbernauld, discovered the hair tightly wound around her four-month-old daughter Rosie’s toe on December 16, leading to a distressing three-day ordeal. The incident occurred as Emma and her partner James, 32, were dressing Rosie for bed and noticed the hair causing redness and swelling on her toe.
Efforts to remove the hair at home failed, prompting Emma and James to seek medical help. They rushed to A&E at University Hospital Monklands, then transferred to The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow for emergency surgery. Doctors revealed that Rosie was on the brink of losing her toe as the hair had obstructed blood flow.
Emma expressed disbelief at the severity of the situation, reflecting on the consultant’s warning that such injuries are common in infants and toddlers. The medical team struggled to remove the deeply embedded hair, resorting to emergency surgery after other methods proved ineffective. Fortunately, the operation was successful, and Rosie was discharged two days later.
Emma urged parents to keep hair removal cream handy to prevent similar incidents, echoing medical advice on using this as a primary treatment method. The harrowing experience serves as a reminder of the hidden dangers that can arise unexpectedly, emphasizing the importance of proactive safety measures in caring for young children.
