Lidl, the well-known supermarket chain, is reportedly venturing into the mobile phone market with cost-effective plans to compete with major networks. To access these budget-friendly offerings, customers will need a Lidl Plus account. This strategic move is part of a substantial £600 million investment by the supermarket giant, which not only includes entering the telecom sector but also entails the opening of 50 new stores nationwide.
Following the trend set by other unconventional players in the telecom industry such as Revolut and Klarna, Lidl is expanding its services to provide affordable phone plans. While the service is currently available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are plans to introduce it in the UK, US, France, and Spain, as reported by the Financial Times.
In collaboration with 1GLOBAL communications provider, Lidl’s parent company, Schwarz Group, has secured a deal to operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), allowing Lidl to offer mobile plans by utilizing existing infrastructure instead of establishing its own network. This move aligns with Schwarz Group’s broader digital strategy, which includes investments in technology sectors like cloud computing and cybersecurity through Schwarz Digits and backing AI startups.
The supermarket chain’s expansion also includes the opening of more than 50 new stores over the next year, generating around 2,000 employment opportunities. The planned locations for these new sites include Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury, among others. Ryan McDonnell, the CEO of Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s commitment to community development and job creation while ensuring access to affordable and nutritious food for all.
Additionally, as part of the agreement with 1GLOBAL, Schwarz Group will acquire a 9.9% stake in the company, which holds telecom licenses and partnerships across 12 countries. This strategic partnership marks a significant step in Schwarz’s digital transformation journey and could potentially disrupt the traditional telecom market by offering competitive pricing and enhanced convenience to consumers.
Kate Dearden, the employment minister, praised the investment by Lidl for creating numerous quality jobs with fair wages, thereby contributing to the economic well-being of communities nationwide.
