The UK government has expressed a lack of sympathy towards the potential downfall of the Iranian regime, with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander labeling Iran as a hostile state aligned with Russia. Amid widespread protests in Iran calling for regime change, Alexander emphasized the need to address the escalating violence that has claimed over 100 lives.
Pointing out Iran’s destabilizing activities, Alexander highlighted its collaboration with Vladimir Putin to circumvent oil sanctions. When questioned about the UK’s stance if the Iranian government collapses, she indicated a similar sentiment would be expressed. The UK’s position, according to Alexander, is to support a peaceful transition of power in Iran, advocating for the restoration of democratic principles and fundamental freedoms.
While acknowledging the presence of a limited number of British citizens in Iran, the UK remains vigilant amid escalating tensions. Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf issued warnings of potential retaliation against the US and Israel, following threats made by US President Donald Trump.
Trump’s vocal support for Iranian protesters has drawn attention, with reports suggesting military options against Iran have been considered but not finalized. Alexander refrained from commenting on foreign military plans, stressing the UK’s focus on monitoring the situation in Iran closely and urging Iranian authorities to prioritize citizen safety, respect fundamental rights, and exercise restraint in responding to protests.
Amid escalating rhetoric, the US state department cautioned against underestimating President Trump’s resolve. The decision on potential military actions lies with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while the US military maintains readiness to defend its interests and allies in the region.
