Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud father living in Toronto, stumbled upon the existence of an international whistling contest while watching the BBC quiz show “Only Connect.” Intrigued, he signed himself and his daughter, Sumire, up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list as a lighthearted activity. Despite his initial nonchalant attitude, Shannon and Sumire found themselves selected to participate in the contest, which took place in Los Angeles.
Both Shannon and Sumire possessed a talent for whistling, a skill passed down from Shannon’s parents to him and then to his daughter. Encouraged by their shared interest, they dedicated time to practicing daily in preparation for the competition. Initially thinking it was a casual event, they were surprised to learn that the contest was a serious affair where participants vied for the title of World Champion.
Seeking guidance, Shannon scheduled a coaching session with Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva. Kaufman provided valuable feedback and emphasized the need for Shannon and Sumire to refine their performances for an audience. Motivated by the challenge, Shannon committed to rigorous practice sessions with Sumire, culminating in their journey to Los Angeles for the competition.
Upon arrival, Shannon and Sumire found themselves among a diverse group of talented contestants from around the world. Witnessing the dedication and artistry of fellow whistlers, Shannon’s initial ironic perspective began to fade. Stepping onto the stage, Sumire showcased her talent by whistling a theme from the Japanese cartoon “Doraemon,” earning a silver medal in the kid’s category. Shannon delivered a winning performance of “It’s Not a Moon” and claimed the gold in the level one adults category.
Reflecting on the experience, Shannon acknowledged the significance of genuinely caring about something and embracing vulnerability. Despite his lingering sense of irony, the competition allowed him to appreciate the authenticity and passion displayed by the participants. Winning at the Masters of Musical Whistling competition highlighted the importance of pursuing genuine interests without fear of judgment, ultimately leading to personal growth and fulfillment.
