A Saskatchewan firm is actively drilling for hydrogen, aiming to demonstrate the viability of extracting it from the ground at a commercial scale instead of relying on fossil fuel production. Earlier this month, Regina-based Max Power Mining initiated drilling of its third well at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan. The company envisions establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system, potentially revolutionizing the primary energy sector.
Chad Levesque, the company’s president and director, emphasized the significance of hydrogen as a crucial element for various industrial processes such as ammonia production, refining petroleum, and transitioning to cleaner energy sources. Highlighting the necessity of eco-friendly sourcing methods for hydrogen, he underscored the potential of naturally occurring hydrogen.
Hydrogen, a versatile gas used for fuel and electricity generation, offers a clean energy solution by producing only water as a byproduct. With its potential to reduce emissions in sectors like transportation and steelmaking, hydrogen has garnered attention as an environmentally friendly energy source. However, the majority of commercially available hydrogen is grey hydrogen, produced from fossil fuels without emission reduction measures, resulting in significant carbon dioxide emissions.
In contrast, green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy, offers lower emissions but comes with higher production costs. The emergence of natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a promising alternative as it can be extracted from underground deposits with relatively low greenhouse gas emissions, utilizing existing extraction techniques.
Natural hydrogen originates from underground processes like serpentinization and radioactive decay, offering a unique opportunity to harness this resource efficiently. While challenges remain in extracting hydrogen deposits dissolved in water, ongoing projects like the one at the Lawson Complex aim to determine the feasibility of extracting natural hydrogen at scale.
