FIFA COO Departs Amid World Cup Sales Controversy

FIFA announced today that Kevin Lamour, the Chief Operating Officer, has departed from the organization. This decision follows Lamour’s public criticism of President Gianni Infantino’s proposal to sell a portion of FIFA’s tournament business, which includes the prestigious World Cup.

A FIFA spokesperson confirmed the end of Lamour’s tenure, expressing gratitude for his two years of service and wishing him success in his future endeavors. FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom communicated Lamour’s departure to staff and Council members, indicating that both parties mutually agreed to part ways after recent discussions.

Lamour had voiced his opposition to the proposal in the past month, alleging that FIFA staff had been misled and labeling the initiative as the brainchild of a single individual. He emphasized that FIFA’s primary mission is to serve football and not the personal agenda of any individual within the organization.

The departure of Lamour comes shortly after another high-profile resignation within FIFA. Carlos Cordeiro, a senior adviser to President Infantino, had also resigned in protest against the sell-off plan, denouncing it as detrimental to the sport of football.

Having joined FIFA in November 2024, Lamour was previously associated with Infantino’s inner circle, actively supporting his presidential campaign in 2016. The recent series of resignations and criticisms within FIFA has brought into question the leadership and decision-making processes under President Infantino’s administration.
