University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah, although not a recipient of the Nobel Prize, was recently honored with an Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobels, a whimsical spin on the prestigious Nobel Prizes, recognize the most unconventional and innovative studies in academia. Thurairajah and his team were awarded this year’s Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on creating a urinal design that minimizes splashing.
Upon learning of their achievement from his mentor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, Thurairajah expressed his delight at the news. The team’s research involved constructing and testing various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornocopia designs, to determine the most effective and hygienic option. The Nautilus design was found to be superior in terms of reduced splashing and ease of maintenance.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues sported bright yellow raincoats as they basked in the recognition from their fellow eccentric scientists. Despite the nature of their research, Thurairajah clarified that no actual urine was involved in their experiments due to hygiene and scientific accuracy concerns. Instead, they developed a machine to simulate urination accurately for testing purposes.
While acknowledging the humor in their work, Thurairajah emphasized the practical significance of their research in enhancing public restroom facilities. The study’s outcomes were documented in a publication in the journal PNAS Nexus. Additionally, Canadian researchers from other institutions were also honored at the ceremony for their studies on unethical behavior and innovative technological applications involving mosquito proboscises.
The Ig Nobel Prizes, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe after three decades in the U.S. due to visa-related issues. Thurairajah, recognizing the global collaboration in the scientific community, supported the decision, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and international cooperation among researchers.
