Search teams have located the remains of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering team that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was made by local volunteers, as confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. Geis, aged 39 and hailing from San Antonio, Texas, was embarking on her first expedition to scale an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.
Earlier this year, Geis had announced on social media that she was shutting down her Pilates studio to venture into the unknown with expectations of encountering helmets, harnesses, and crampons. Her family described her as a radiant presence deeply cherished by her loved ones and friends.
The search operation, initiated on July 31 following the avalanche that struck the expedition led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja on Broad Peak, has now concluded with Geis’s recovery. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a Nepali climber and ex-British Army soldier, made headlines in 2019 by conquering the world’s 14 highest peaks within a groundbreaking 189 days, a feat showcased in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” However, his record got surpassed in 2023.
Tragic accidents are a frequent occurrence during mountain expeditions in northern Pakistan due to hazards like avalanches, falling ice and rock, high altitudes, and unpredictable weather conditions.
