The recurring flooding incidents have left them constantly on alert, with a fear of potential tornadoes or heavy rain, creating a sense of post-traumatic stress.
DeForest and her neighbors have adopted a cautious approach, refraining from leaving their homes simultaneously to ensure someone is always present to monitor any possible threats. The uncertainty of whether the rain might seep into their homes or those of their neighbors has added to their apprehension.
City officials have noted that the College, Bay, and Knoxdale-Merivale wards bore the brunt of the flooding on July 1, causing significant damage to numerous basements and yards. Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine, after engaging with affected residents, emphasized the urgent need for additional support to address the ongoing challenges faced by many households.
The city has initiated an evaluation of its response to the Canada Day storm, aiming to enhance preparedness for future extreme weather occurrences. Devine stressed the importance of deliberating on the level of investment required and the potential sacrifices needed to mitigate such risks, acknowledging the time-intensive nature of the solution process.
Another Nepean resident, Wesley Bova, shared concerns about the lingering unease following the recent storm, despite its lesser impact compared to the Canada Day deluge. The lingering fear of a repeat incident has left Bova’s family apprehensive, with a sense of foreboding whenever dark clouds gather.
