Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the Calgary Wild, sitting at the bottom of the standings, pulled off a 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Rapid, the top-ranked team in the Northern Super League, during a match at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
The hosts took the lead with Kahli Johnson’s goal in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 around 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young scored in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton secured her second goal just before halftime, propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris managed a penalty goal in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now have 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. This loss ended Ottawa’s unbeaten streak of 10 matches.
Despite holding 54% possession, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (9-6 on target). The Wild earned six of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored twice for the Vancouver Rise, with a 57th-minute equalizer and a goal in the second-half stoppage time, leading her team to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had put the Tides ahead with a goal in the 19th minute. The Rise dominated possession with 56%, outshooting the Tides 18-13, including 6-4 on target.
The Tides had the majority of the corners, securing four out of six, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued during the game.
