Actor and champion of disability rights, RJ Mitte, who brought his personal experience with cerebral palsy to the portrayal of family challenges on the TV series “Breaking Bad,” passed away on Monday at the age of 34, as confirmed by authorities and his representatives. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa stated to The Associated Press that Mitte was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m. at his residence in Brownsville, Texas. While the cause of death was not disclosed, an autopsy is scheduled to determine it.
Known for his role as Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s character on the popular AMC show, Mitte appeared in nearly all episodes across the five seasons. His personal experience with cerebral palsy, diagnosed when he was three years old, provided him with a unique perspective that enhanced his performance, as he shared in an interview with The Associated Press in 2014.
Mitte, a native of Jackson, Mississippi, began his acting career in 2006 upon relocating to Los Angeles. He secured minor roles in sitcoms before landing the role of Walter White Jr. on “Breaking Bad” in 2007, a role he portrayed until the show’s conclusion in 2013.
His representatives commemorated his legacy by highlighting his dedication to disability awareness and inclusion, noting his efforts to challenge stereotypes and advocate for better representation. Mitte’s acting credits extended to series like “Switched at Birth” and “Guardians of Justice,” along with producing independent films. Beyond his acting career, Mitte was actively involved as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, in addition to leading his philanthropic initiative, the Mitte Foundation, supporting various community projects related to disabilities.
