A campaign to secure a new location for a library on the west end of St. John’s has encountered a setback, but an advocate remains optimistic about finding a suitable venue soon.
The Michael Donovan Public Library ceased operations at the Waterford Valley Mall on Topsail Road two months ago following the expiration of its lease agreement.
According to a report by AllNewfoundlandLabrador, a call for proposals issued by the provincial government for a new site did not attract any submissions.
Expressing frustration and disappointment, Josh Smee, vice-chair of the non-profit advisory board Friends of the St. John’s Public Library, mentioned that the closure has left community members without access to a library. Despite its modest size, the library had a loyal following among patrons.
Smee acknowledged that the failed tender process will delay the relocation efforts but remains hopeful that there is still interest in reopening the library in the west end.
A statement from Janelle Simms, spokesperson for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, confirmed that consultations are ongoing with Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries to determine the next steps, emphasizing the commitment to keeping the library in the west end.
Appealing to potential landlords, Smee urged those with available space in the west end of St. John’s to participate in the process, suggesting that some may have overlooked the earlier tender opportunity. He anticipates a revised tender that will yield positive results in the future.
Highlighting the community’s strong attachment to the library and the dedicated efforts of the staff, Smee emphasized the importance of reinstating the branch in the area.
Juanette Anthony, a library user, expressed her disappointment over the closure of the Michael Donovan Public Library, noting its convenient location and essential computer services. She advocated for the library’s return to the same vicinity, ideally in a larger space with an expanded collection of books and computers.
Overall, the quest for a new home for the library continues as stakeholders navigate the challenges to ensure continued access to essential library services for the community.
