“Search for Missing Canadian Mountain Runner Paused”

Share

The search by helicopter for Canadian mountain runner Kalie McCrystal on the Italian side of the Matterhorn has been paused as efforts to locate the 38-year-old athlete and lawyer from Squamish, B.C., have so far been unsuccessful.

After a full day of aerial searches on Thursday yielded no results, the dedicated helicopter operation was called off. McCrystal was last seen heading towards the summit from the Jean-Antoine Carrel hut at approximately 3,830 meters.

Initially, a large air ambulance helicopter was utilized for the search, but it was later replaced by a smaller aircraft capable of maneuvering closer to the mountain’s rugged terrain. Despite these efforts, no signs of McCrystal were found.

The last confirmed sighting was when a mountain guide encountered McCrystal above the Carrel hut. She mentioned to the guide that she was training to attempt a record. Subsequent searches using helicopters equipped with a RECCO detector, which can locate reflective equipment like beacons, did not yield any results.

McCrystal, a prominent skyrunner in Canada, had been preparing in the Cervinia area of Italy for a swift climb and descent of the Matterhorn via the Lion Ridge. Despite the suspension of the helicopter search, mountain guides in the area are continuing to scour the mountain for any signs of McCrystal. Efforts to trace her cellphone signal have also been unsuccessful.

Known for her skyrunning achievements, McCrystal recently completed a solo ascent and descent from Zermatt via the Swiss Hörnli Ridge in record time. The search operation remains open as rescuers await further information that could aid in pinpointing McCrystal’s whereabouts for a more focused search.

Global Affairs Canada has been contacted for updates on the situation.
