The International Swimming League (ISL) is making a comeback after a five-year break with an All-Star Match scheduled for December 19 at the London Aquatics Centre, as announced by the league. This event will showcase top swimmers from around the world competing for a substantial prize pool, with specific details to be disclosed later. Notable swimmers who have participated in past ISL events include Caeleb Dressel from the U.S., Adam Peaty from Britain, and Katinka Hosszu from Hungary.
Last year, ISL Commissioner Ben Allen outlined plans for the league’s relaunch, aiming for a full restart in the autumn of 2026 with a revised commercial strategy focused on diversifying revenue streams through sponsorships and media partnerships. The ISL, established in 2019 to offer a professional swimming competition outside the Olympic calendar, last held a season in 2021 before facing disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic and challenges related to its main supporter, Konstantin Grigorishin, amid Russia’s conflict with Ukraine.
In December, Allen revealed intentions for a comeback season with seven matches spanning North America, Europe, Asia, and possibly the Middle East, potentially adopting a one-day competition format in contrast to previous two-day events. In a positive move, the league announced in July that it would settle overdue prize money for approximately 300 athletes from the 2021 season.
The upcoming London All-Star Match is seen as a trial run for a more condensed approach before a broader ISL return. ISL Commissioner Allen expressed enthusiasm for the event, highlighting London as an ideal host city with a venue suitable for such prestigious competitions and a passionate sports audience.
The London Aquatics Centre, originally constructed for the 2012 Olympics, has a history of hosting significant international swimming competitions. Further details regarding participating swimmers, match format, ticket sales, and broadcasting arrangements for the event will be disclosed by the ISL in the near future.
