A mother smiled as her son was sentenced to jail for killing his father. Lincoln Peterson, now 16, committed the act at the age of 15. His mother, Abigail Peterson, expressed joy when he was released on parole for the shooting of Jeremy Paterson, aged 45.
The incident occurred when Lincoln’s parents decided to confiscate his electronics due to his poor school grades. Suspecting him of hiding electronics, an argument escalated, during which Abigail reportedly struck Lincoln with a belt. In an attempt to flee, Lincoln accidentally discharged a handgun left on a dryer.
During his sentencing in Nevada, Lincoln expressed deep regret, stating that none of it was intentional. Prosecutors sought a sentence of six to 15 years, highlighting past instances of violent behavior by Peterson. Despite this, Judge Tierra Jones decided to spare him jail time, citing the overwhelming support he received.
As part of his probation lasting until he turns 21, Lincoln must attend counseling, obtain a high school diploma or equivalent, disclose his electronic passwords to parole officers, adhere to a curfew, and abstain from drugs and alcohol. Any violation could result in a three to 7.5-year jail term.
Prosecutor Laura Rose emphasized the severity of the case and the lack of provocation for such actions, arguing that jail time was warranted. Reflecting on the tragedy, Lincoln’s mother shared the profound pain of losing her husband at the hands of her son, underscoring the complexity of forgiveness amidst sorrow.
