Six weather advisories are currently active in the UK, with one area projected to receive up to 25 inches of snow. The Met Office has raised concerns about snow and ice, emphasizing potential travel disruptions. Due to icy conditions, numerous schools, including many in Wales, have closed for the safety of students.
Today, temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing, especially in eastern regions, which will experience the coldest conditions. Significant snowfall is anticipated in the Northern Highlands and the Isle of Skye, where up to 65cm of snow may accumulate in the next few days.
An amber weather warning has been issued for specific areas, indicating heavy snowfall likely to cause travel disruptions. Travel delays on roads are expected in Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, and Highlands & Eilean Siar regions throughout the day.
In addition to the amber warning, there are five other weather alerts in place, four for snow and ice and one solely for ice. Another snow event is forecasted for later in the week, particularly affecting the Midlands as low pressure moves in from the southwest.
Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert from the Met Office stated that the UK will face various winter weather challenges this week, including low temperatures, snow showers, and the risk of ice. Multiple severe weather warnings have been issued and are likely to be updated periodically.
Among the weather warnings for today is a snow and ice alert for parts of North East England and Yorkshire Humber, where scattered snow showers and icy patches could disrupt travel.
