“UK Braces for Severe Snowstorm Threat”

Share

A wave of blizzards is forecasted to hit the majority of the UK in the upcoming days, according to the Met Office. Snowfall is expected to cover extensive areas, especially the Midlands, on Thursday as a low-pressure system moves in from the southwest. The persisting cold air across the UK will cause any precipitation from the low-pressure system to turn into snow, resulting in potential travel disruptions.

Northern England and much of Scotland are expected to experience continued cold temperatures. Recent snowfall blanketed parts of the nation, leading to school closures in some areas. The Met Office, still under various snow and ice warnings, is closely monitoring the approaching low-pressure system, likely to arrive early on Thursday.

Meteorologist Aidan McGivern mentioned the uncertainty surrounding the path of the Atlantic low-pressure system. However, both scenarios are likely to bring snow across most regions of the UK. The Midlands could see the heaviest snowfall on Thursday, with central areas facing disruption risks from snow while southern parts may experience wind and rain.

Further weather warnings may be issued by the Met Office for the upcoming inclement weather period. Cold temperatures are expected to persist over the weekend, creating icy conditions that could impact events like the FA Cup third round proper. Travel delays, vehicle strandings, and disruptions to rail and air travel are anticipated due to the snow and lingering ice in some areas.

Meteorologist Jo Farrow from NetWeather highlighted the cold conditions expected overnight Wednesday into Thursday, particularly in eastern Britain. Attention is shifting to a low-pressure signal later on Thursday, with severe gales and heavy rain turning into snow for northern Britain and Northern Ireland. Friday is projected to be wet, wintry, and stormy as the low-pressure system moves across Britain.
