“Microsoft Warns Windows 10 Users: End of Support Looms”

Share

Microsoft has issued an urgent warning to Windows 10 users as the end of support for the operating system approaches in 2025. With just a few weeks left until the deadline, the tech giant has alerted users about the upcoming changes.

In a recent update on its website, Microsoft stated, “Reminder: Windows 10 will reach end of servicing on October 14, 2025.” The final monthly security update is scheduled for October 2025, after which devices running Windows 10 will no longer receive regular security updates to protect against the latest threats.

For users still relying on Windows 10, the recommended actions are clear. They should either upgrade to Windows 11 promptly or opt for Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates service, which ensures continued security support for the next three years.

Failure to take action leaves devices vulnerable to potential cyber attacks and software issues. Unlike Windows 11, Windows 10 will not receive any new feature updates post-2025.

To prepare for the Windows 10 deadline, users can choose between two primary options:

UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 11:
If your PC is compatible, upgrading to Windows 11 is a straightforward process. Microsoft offers free updates, making it easy to follow the instructions and transition to the new operating system. Alternatively, purchasing a new laptop with Windows 11 pre-installed is another viable option, although it may involve significant costs.

STICK WITH WINDOWS 10:
For users opting to stay with Windows 10, enrolling in Microsoft’s Extended Updates service (ESUs) is advisable. While ESUs do not introduce new features, they ensure that PCs are shielded from known security threats and bugs. Microsoft has set the annual fee for ESUs at $30 (£24), providing access to critical security updates for Windows 10.

Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Windows, emphasized the importance of securing existing PCs during the transition period. Microsoft is introducing an ESU program for personal users, offering a one-year option for $30. Enrollment details will be available closer to the 2025 end-of-support date.

Although Windows 10 will not cease functioning on October 14, continued usage without security updates poses risks. It is strongly advised to take proactive steps to safeguard devices and consider the available upgrade options.
