A man’s life was endangered when a sophisticated cocktail served at a corporate Christmas party caused a severe stomach injury. The incident occurred during a swanky event featuring a “cryo-show” by an unnamed celebrity chef who used liquid nitrogen to create flashy cocktails. Despite the potential dangers of ingesting liquid nitrogen before it fully evaporates, guests were not forewarned about the risks. One man was encouraged to immediately consume the cocktail, leading to his sudden collapse at a cooking studio in Moscow.
The victim, identified as Sergey, 38, was rushed to intensive care where emergency surgery was performed to repair his torn stomach. Although Sergey is conscious and recovering, medical professionals have classified his condition as serious. The rapid expansion of gas inside his body, caused by the liquid nitrogen ingestion, resulted in the stomach rupture.
The festive office celebration turned chaotic as guests witnessed the medical team’s frantic efforts to save Sergey’s life. Liquid nitrogen, boiling violently at room temperature, poses severe risks if ingested prematurely, as it can lead to internal injuries or even death. The substance transforms into gas within the body, expanding significantly and generating intense internal pressure, potentially causing stomach rupture, internal bleeding, and organ damage.
Drinks containing liquid nitrogen are safe only after complete evaporation of the nitrogen. Even a small residue of liquid nitrogen can pose life-threatening risks if ingested. This incident follows the tragic death of a mother-of-three who unknowingly consumed a cocktail laced with “industrial cleaner” during a Valentine’s Day outing in Oklahoma in 2023. The chemical caused severe damage to her throat and oesophagus, leading to her untimely demise after years of medical procedures and complications.
The victim’s family alleged that a second margarita contained industrial cleaning solution and pursued legal action against the bar, resulting in a confidential settlement.
