Wildcard selection Will Jacks has surprisingly been named in England’s lineup for the second Ashes Test, stepping in for Shoaib Bashir in Brisbane.
Jacks, who had previously played two Test matches on Pakistan’s spinning pitches three years ago and had only been involved in limited-overs cricket since then, was an unexpected addition to the tour squad but is now slated to feature in a crucial day/night match at the Gabba.
Due to fast bowler Mark Wood’s absence due to injury, it was anticipated that the touring side would make changes after their rapid defeat in Perth. Opting for a spin bowling option over additional seamers Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts, Jacks was the chosen replacement.
Shoaib Bashir, England’s primary spinner for the past two years with 68 wickets in 19 matches, was not retained in the team despite his consistent performances. Jacks’ inclusion was attributed to his superior batting skills and agile fielding, along with his off-spin capabilities.
Jacks further solidified his selection by impressing during the pre-series warm-up at Lilac Hill, where he played for the England Lions team and dismissed prominent batsmen like Stokes, Joe Root, and Harry Brook.
While Jacks had a decent debut in Test cricket with six wickets in Multan, his subsequent opportunities were limited. Despite only featuring in a few first-class matches for Surrey last summer, he showcased potential with five wickets at an average of 38.80.
Acknowledging the importance of spin in day/night matches, England’s all-rounder Stokes highlighted the strategic influence of Australian spinner Nathan Lyon in such conditions.
England’s primary focus remains on their strong pace attack, led by Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Stokes himself. Stokes emphasized the need to maintain their fitness and effectiveness. He also praised Jacks’ aggressive batting style and highlighted his ability to play under pressure.
Explaining Jacks’ surprise inclusion, men’s cricket managing director Rob Key noted that while Jacks is still developing as a spinner, his dual ability to contribute with the bat and handle challenging situations made him a valuable asset for the team.
