“New Year’s Eve Fireworks: Heed 1am Rule or Face Penalties”

Share

People gearing up for New Year’s Eve festivities on December 31 should heed the 1am rule to avoid potential penalties. Violating regulations surrounding fireworks can lead to severe consequences, including hefty fines and even imprisonment.

While many enjoy welcoming the new year with fireworks, it is essential to adhere to the law that prohibits setting off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except for special circumstances. However, on New Year’s Eve, this restriction is relaxed, allowing fireworks displays until 1am.

West Yorkshire Police emphasizes that using fireworks outside the designated curfew hours can result in imprisonment for up to six months and significant fines. Misusing fireworks to cause a disturbance can also lead to legal repercussions.

Additionally, it is illegal for individuals under 18 to possess fireworks in public places, except for sparklers and party poppers. Supplying fireworks to minors under 18 is also against the law. Only licensed fireworks professionals are permitted to handle Category 4 fireworks, and it is strictly prohibited to throw fireworks in public areas like streets or highways.

During the festive season, the lawful purchase and sale of fireworks are restricted to the period between December 26 and December 31. Those who engage in illegal sales or use of fireworks risk facing unlimited fines, imprisonment for up to six months, and immediate fines of £90.

Remember to comply with regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable New Year celebration.
