Rute Cardoso expressed her appreciation to well-wishers for their kindness during a challenging period in a heartfelt Instagram post. The wife of Diogo Jota accompanied their children to Anfield for the match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Their sons, Dinis and Duarte, served as mascots for the day in a touching event at Anfield. Ahead of the game, the kids walked onto the field alongside Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa, in a moving moment as the two Premier League teams represented by Jota played together for the first time since his passing.

Rute, who had recently married Jota before the tragic accident, watched from the stands. The crowd delivered a deeply emotional rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” in response.

Van Dijk then led Dinis and Duarte to the Kop, engaging in a kickabout with them while receiving applause from supporters. Earlier, Wolves fans gathered at the Jota memorial outside Anfield, leaving various tributes in his honor.

Liverpool emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline, courtesy of goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Florian Wirtz. Gravenberch paid tribute to Jota by performing his iconic baby shark celebration after scoring.

The club shared a poignant video featuring Jota’s children fulfilling their mascot duties, including moments of Van Dijk embracing Rute before the match. Following the game, Jota’s widow shared heartfelt images of their children on Instagram.

In a statement, she expressed her gratitude to the club and fans for their overwhelming support during the difficult time, emphasizing the significance of their messages and gestures.

The Reds skipper described leading Jota’s sons onto the pitch as “an honor.” He highlighted the emotional significance of the moment for the boys and their enduring connection to Liverpool and Jota’s memory.

Anfield fans continue to pay tribute to Jota by chanting his name during the 20th minute of each game, honoring his squad number retired by the club in his memory. Supporters flooded Rute’s Instagram post with heartfelt messages for the family.

Messages of love and support poured in from various individuals, including Jota’s former teammate Jose Sa and Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas. The football community continues to remember Jota fondly.
