Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood fell short of the £1.1 million top prize at the Abu Dhabi Championship as Aaron Rai emerged victorious in a thrilling playoff. This event marked the first of the DP World Tour Play-off series, signaling the culmination of the Race to Dubai.

Yas Links witnessed the competitive performances of two celebrated European Ryder Cup stars, with Fleetwood narrowly missing out in the playoff and McIlroy securing a joint third-place finish. The Abu Dhabi Championship, designated as a Play-off event, boasted an increased prize pool of nearly £7 million.

Fleetwood claimed a prize of over £750,000, while McIlroy shared a purse of £752,000 with Nicolai Højgaard for their combined third and fourth-place finish. Despite starting the final round six shots behind leader Rai, McIlroy’s remarkable round of 62 propelled him back into contention but ultimately fell short of victory.

Following McIlroy’s finish at 24 under, both Fleetwood and Rai made crucial putts on the 17th to head into the final hole tied at 25 under. In the playoff, Rai clinched the win with a birdie putt after Fleetwood could only manage a par, securing the top prize.

Reflecting on his triumph, Rai expressed his elation and gratitude, acknowledging the competitive spirit displayed by Fleetwood throughout the tournament. He credited his caddie for providing crucial support during challenging moments, ultimately helping him finish strong and secure the victory.

The DP World Tour Championship, slated to commence on November 13, will mark the conclusion of the Race to Dubai.
