An antiques dealer known for his kindness is feared to have been swept out to sea while swimming on Christmas Day. Matthew Upham, aged 63, was one of two men reported missing in challenging waters at Budleigh Salterton in Devon. The other man, in his 40s, is also missing and is presumed to have drowned while attempting to rescue Upham.
Concerns arose at 10.25am when a group of individuals were spotted in the sea during blustery conditions, prompting emergency services to respond. Despite rescue efforts, two men, one in his 40s and the other in his 60s, could not be located. A search operation involving various rescue teams and lifeboats was initiated, but was called off at 5pm due to darkness. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the men were still missing and their families had been notified.
Described by friends as a kind and cheerful individual well-known in the community, Upham was said to be a regular swimmer with good knowledge of the local waters. Friends expressed hope that he had found shelter after being carried by a strong wave. The identity of the younger man who tried to assist Upham has not been disclosed.
Due to adverse weather conditions, several planned swims in Devon and Cornwall for Christmas and Boxing Day were canceled following a yellow weather warning for wind. A BBC journalist present at the scene noted the rough sea conditions, emphasizing the need for caution before entering the water.
