Carol Kirkwood shared the unexpected journey of her time at BBC Breakfast as news of her departure from the broadcaster emerged. The well-loved Scottish meteorologist has been part of the corporation for almost thirty years, joining the BBC in 1998 and is set to leave in April. She expressed gratitude for the privilege of presenting the nation’s daily weather forecast to millions.
Despite her successful career as the face of BBC Weather, Carol confessed that being a prominent weather presenter was not her initial aspiration. In a conversation on Gaby Roslin’s Reasons To Be Joyful podcast, she revealed that her childhood dream was to become a Blue Peter presenter due to the show’s appeal. However, her career path took a different turn, leading her to television presenting by coincidence.
Carol made her exit announcement after her regular morning weather segment on Tuesday, January 27. She looks forward to spending more quality time with her husband, Steve Randall, and embarking on travel adventures. Before joining BBC News in 1998, she worked at The Weather Channel and has been the primary weather presenter on BBC Breakfast since 2010.
In addition to her weather presenting duties, Carol reported from various locations such as Wimbledon, the Chelsea Flower Show, and various Royal events. She also showcased her dancing skills on Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, paired with Pasha Kovalev.
During a heartfelt conversation with presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent, Carol expressed her affection for her colleagues and emphasized her desire to prioritize personal relationships over work. She humorously mentioned looking forward to giving up early-morning wake-up calls and joked about alarm clocks becoming obsolete.
Acknowledging the difficulty of her decision, Carol emphasized that it felt like the right time to step away from her current role. She expressed gratitude for the wonderful memories she will carry with her from her time at the BBC. Steve is Carol’s second husband, following her divorce from her first husband, Jimmy Kirkwood, in 2008.
