“Beast from the East: Britons Brace for Severe Winter”

Share

Britons may face another bout of severe winter weather known as the Beast from the East, as freezing easterly winds and widespread snowfall could lead to potential prolonged disruptions later this month.

Recent weather models suggest a significant shift in atmospheric patterns, hinting at the possibility of high pressure settling over Scandinavia. This could result in bitterly cold air sweeping across the UK from the east, according to senior meteorologist Jim Dale from British Weather Services.

While the development of high pressure over Norway and Sweden is anticipated to bring easterly winds around the 21st of the month, Dale emphasized that cold air alone does not ensure chaos. For a true Beast from the East scenario, sustained snowfall alongside the cold winds is crucial, which is currently lacking.

Forecasters are evaluating three potential outcomes, ranging from a minor chill with a slight temperature drop to a full-blown winter crisis. The worst-case scenario involves heavy snowfall across the country, potentially lasting into early February. The possibility of widespread snow moving westward from the eastern regions is also being considered.

The timeframe for potential disruption is expected to begin around January 21, with the impact possibly extending well into February. Dale warned that if the severe scenario unfolds, the UK could experience continuous frost, ice, and snow for an extended period.

Today’s weather forecast includes morning frost and fog, followed by a mix of sunshine and showers later in the day. Wettest conditions are anticipated in the west and southwest, with highs reaching around 10C in the south and 8C in the north, dropping to 5C in Edinburgh.
