An acclaimed bed and breakfast (B&B) and café has shut down in a significant setback for the local community, with the owner attributing the closure to challenges related to its location that hindered attracting passing customers.
The Dove Inn, a gluten-free café and B&B located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations on Friday after a successful run of two and a half years, catering to a clientele described by owner Sonya Resemblance as “wonderful individuals.”
This closure reflects the broader crisis facing the pub and hospitality sectors in the UK, where a rising number of establishments are closing annually due to escalating expenses and evolving consumer behaviors.
In a parallel situation, the beloved White Horse pub on London End in Beaconsfield recently closed permanently. Pub owners had previously cautioned about the industry’s precarious state, with soaring costs leading to a significant closure rate, including 300 pubs shutting down in the initial quarter of 2025.
Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before its closure, The Dove Inn faced insurmountable challenges. Under Sonya Resemblance’s management since July 2023, the inn offered a variety of meals, including brunch, lunch, and popular Sunday roasts, contributing to local employment, training opportunities, and mental health-focused events.
The establishment also received accolades at Luxlife Magazine’s Food and Drink Awards in Norfolk, winning titles such as Emerging Hospitality Business of the Year and B&B and Pub of the Year.
An important feature of The Dove Inn was its entirely gluten-free menu, a point of pride for Sonya, who aimed to provide a safe dining experience for individuals with dietary restrictions.
Expressing gratitude to patrons, Sonya acknowledged the positive impact of the business in creating employment opportunities, nurturing social spaces, and promoting mental well-being but lamented the inability to sustain operations at the current location, attributing the closure to this factor.
The decision to close followed an earlier announcement by the business, acknowledging the operational challenges amid the broader retail and hospitality industry pressures.
Despite efforts from loyal customers to support the business in its final days, Sonya confirmed the closure on Friday, January 16, eliciting an outpouring of supportive messages.
One customer conveyed their disappointment at the news and expressed hope for a potential return of the beloved establishment in the future.
