Boxing icon Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped a fatal car crash in Nigeria, where two individuals lost their lives. Shocking images captured the British sports star, 36, moments after he emerged from the wreckage of an SUV following the tragic accident in Ogun State. Reports suggest Joshua, a former two-time heavyweight champion, was on a holiday trip after a recent £70 million victory over Jake Paul.
Joshua, of Nigerian descent, was a backseat passenger in a Lexus that collided with a stationary truck. Nigerian authorities released images showing Joshua in distress amidst the shattered glass. Unfortunately, one passenger next to Joshua and the front-seat passenger did not survive the crash.
The accident occurred on the dangerous Lagos-Ibadan expressway, a route with a history of fatal incidents. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene to assist the injured. Joshua was taken to a hospital for medical care, according to Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo. The identities of the deceased victims are yet to be disclosed.
The SUV, reportedly traveling at an excessive speed, lost control during an overtaking maneuver and collided with a parked truck. Dramatic footage captured bystanders aiding Joshua from the wreck. Authorities mentioned that Joshua’s security team was in a separate vehicle following the convoy.
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, expressed relief that Joshua appeared to be okay following the accident. Meanwhile, the Ogun State Government extended condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident. Joshua, known for his ties to Nigeria, is a frequent visitor to Sagamu in Ogun State, his family’s hometown.
The incident occurred shortly after Joshua’s recent victory over Jake Paul, with plans for future fights in Riyadh. The boxer shared moments of his holiday on social media just before the accident. Despite the ordeal, Joshua is expected to make a full recovery and continue his career in the ring.
