BT has announced a significant update regarding landline services, signaling a crucial transition for households relying on this technology. The traditional copper cables, in use for over a century, are scheduled to be phased out within a year, with January 31, 2027, set as the deadline.

The switch to new digital services, leveraging internet-based calling, is imperative as the existing copper infrastructure is deemed outdated, overloaded, and unsuitable for current connectivity demands. BT’s Digital Voice system represents the latest advancement, promising enhanced stability, clearer audio quality, call forwarding to mobile devices, and improved call screening features to combat scams and unwanted solicitations.

While over three million UK homes have already made the transition to Digital Voice, many more households need to follow suit. BT encourages prompt action, emphasizing that support is available to facilitate the shift and warning of potential disruptions to phone and broadband services if customers overlook the impending deadline.

As the era of copper wires comes to a close, it is essential for individuals to assess their readiness for the upcoming network retirement. The process of switching to digital landlines is straightforward, with most BT handsets already compatible. Retaining existing phone numbers and stable billing are assured, without any associated price increases. In cases where a simple plug-and-play setup is insufficient, contacting the provider or arranging a technician visit may be necessary.

BT also highlights the importance of notifying the provider promptly for customers with special needs, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, to ensure tailored support arrangements are in place. Individuals are advised to verify their transition status promptly to guarantee preparedness before the copper network is decommissioned.

Allison Kirkby, BT Group Chief Executive, underlines the significance of upgrading the UK’s digital infrastructure for enhanced connectivity, emphasizing the role of reliable networks in fostering growth and opportunity across homes, businesses, and communities. BT’s substantial investments in infrastructure underscore its commitment to bolstering modern, secure, and resilient connectivity nationwide.
