“Call the Midwife” Christmas Special Brings Emotional Farewell

The popular BBC series “Call The Midwife” has been captivating audiences for more than ten years with its heartwarming portrayal of the midwives at Nonnatus House. As the show gears up for its 15th season, viewers have had to bid farewell to some beloved cast members.

Since its debut in 2012, the nostalgic drama has continued to resonate with audiences, and the upcoming Christmas special promises to be no exception. Set to air on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, the festive episodes will feature a gripping storyline that takes the nuns and nurses on a daring mission overseas.

The new episode will transport viewers back to 1971 as Fred (Cliff Parisi) and Violet Buckle (Annabelle Apsion) embark on a journey to Hong Kong to celebrate Christmas with Violet’s son, Derek (Nicholas Atkinson).

While fans eagerly await the return of “Call the Midwife,” let’s take a moment to remember some of the show’s former stars who have sadly passed away.

Ronald Pickup, known for his role as Philip Worth in the series, portrayed the husband of Jennifer Worth, played by Vanessa Redgrave. Pickup, who also appeared in “Doctor Who” and “The Crown,” passed away in February 2021 at the age of 80, surrounded by his loved ones.

Clare Cathcart, who played Mrs. Torpy on the show, tragically passed away at the age of 48 due to an asthma attack. The talented actress, recognized for her work on “Holby City” and “Tracy Beaker Returns,” was found deceased in her home in 2014.

Jane Whittenshaw, best known for her role as Nurse Barrington, sadly passed away at the age of 53. With a career that included appearances in “Broadchurch,” “Casualty,” and “EastEnders,” Whittenshaw left a lasting impact on the industry.

Warren Clarke, who portrayed John Lacey in “Call The Midwife,” passed away in 2014 at the age of 67. In addition to his role on the show, Clarke was renowned for his work in “A Clockwork Orange” and “Dalziel and Pascoe.”

Kev Corbishley, a valued crew member of the show, passed away in 2022. Serving as a standby rigger on the camera and electrical department from 2020 to 2022, Corbishley was honored with a dedicated episode of “Call the Midwife” following his untimely death.

“Call the Midwife” will return to BBC One and iPlayer on Christmas Day, continuing to charm audiences with its touching stories and memorable characters.
