Canada’s flag football teams began their journey at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championship in Düsseldorf, Germany with victorious performances on Thursday. The Canadian women’s team achieved a 27-14 win over Panama in their opening match, with quarterback Sara Parker throwing four touchdowns, three of which were caught by wide receiver Caroline Moquin-Joubert and one by Laura Molimard.
In another impressive display, the Canadian women dominated their game against Brazil, securing a 36-6 victory after taking a commanding 20-0 lead by halftime. Marianne Quirion and Frédérique Morneau each contributed two touchdown catches, with Molimard adding one more to the scoreboard.
On the men’s side, the Canadian team kicked off their campaign with a 26-6 win against Austria. Quarterback Michael O’Connor shined, completing 19 of 24 passes for four touchdowns in the match.
Aside from the pursuit of a world title, teams are also vying for a chance to compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The top-two finishers at the world championships will secure spots in the Olympics, marking the sport’s debut in the prestigious event.
Both Canadian teams will conclude the group stage with matchups against Japan on Friday. The men will play at 2 a.m. ET, followed by the women at 4:30 a.m. ET. Fans can catch all the action live on CBCSports.ca and CBC Gem.
Initially set to face Nigeria, the Canadian men will now receive an automatic win as Nigeria withdrew from the tournament due to visa complications.
