Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances at the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, Calif. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100-metre butterfly and later claimed bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, bringing her total medal count to five. In the 100m butterfly, Ruck set a personal best time of 56.71 seconds, finishing behind American Gretchen Walsh. McIntosh, on the other hand, faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final in the women’s 400m freestyle event, despite winning the B final. She took full responsibility for the misjudgment and expressed frustration over missing out on the final.
Ruck expressed satisfaction with her performance, highlighting the importance of rest and trusting her body. McIntosh, still processing her setback, acknowledged the need to reflect on her training and vowed to bounce back. Meanwhile, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney, who won the men’s 100m backstroke earlier, celebrated his first international gold medal. McIntosh will aim to redeem herself in the upcoming 200m IM event, where she holds world records and titles.
In relay events, Ruck guided Canada to a bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay, while the men’s team narrowly missed the podium. The U.S. and Australia dominated the relay events, claiming gold and silver medals. The Canadian swimmers continue to strive for success in the ongoing championships.
