Carney Slams U.S. Officials Over Derogatory Comments

Prime Minister Mark Carney has criticized U.S. cabinet officials for making derogatory remarks about Canada and its military, calling the comments inappropriate and urging a more serious approach to trade negotiations. Carney’s response came after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy made disparaging comments about Canada’s navy and military capabilities.

Carney emphasized the need for the U.S. to shift focus from provocative rhetoric to constructive dialogue, highlighting the importance of respectful and productive discussions between the two countries. He expressed disappointment at the lack of seriousness in the recent interactions and stressed the significance of maintaining a respectful tone during trade negotiations.

Following the breakdown of trade talks between Canada and the U.S., President Donald Trump and his administration resorted to social media attacks and provocative actions, including imposing tariffs and engaging in online mockery. This behavior drew criticism from various Canadian officials, including Defence Minister David McGuinty and Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego, who condemned the disrespectful nature of the remarks.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew also stood up against Trump’s actions, with Ford issuing a bold response and Kinew drawing a comparison to a fading band in a casino. Carney, on his part, expressed firmness in his decision to halt negotiations due to unreasonable demands from the U.S. that would have negatively impacted key Canadian industries and cultural aspects.

Despite the setbacks, Carney remains hopeful for a potential trade deal that respects Canadian sovereignty and cultural values. In response to the U.S.’s imposition of tariffs on Canadian exports, Canada announced reciprocal tariffs, signaling a firm stance in protecting its interests. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s upcoming meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent aims to maintain a serious yet constructive dialogue to address the trade dispute.

In a recent poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, a majority of Americans expressed opposition to Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods and the renaming of Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” reflecting a disapproval of these measures. The survey results underscore the growing discontent among Americans regarding the trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada.
