A man who survived a Christmas swim incident where two individuals went missing at sea, presumed dead, shared how he was rescued by two courageous individuals.
A large crowd gathered at Budleigh Salterton, located in Devon, for the annual traditional Christmas swim. Unfortunately, a group encountered severe difficulties in the water, with reports of 6ft waves and 65mph wind gusts at the beach.
Mike Brown, a participant in the swim at Budleigh Salterton, recounted his harrowing experience of being rescued in extreme conditions. Mike, aged 60, expressed gratitude towards two bystanders who bravely entered the water to save him from the turbulent waves.
In an interview with the BBC, Mike reflected on the perilous situation, stating, “The conditions were far worse than usual, some of the most challenging I have ever encountered while swimming. Looking back, it was clearly a mistake to attempt it.”
Having lived in Budleigh Salterton for nearly thirty years, Mike recounted how he struggled to get back to shore after entering the water on Christmas Day.
He narrated, “After being repeatedly hit by waves against the rocks, I managed to reach shallower waters but was completely exhausted. I lacked the strength to stand and had sustained multiple head injuries.”
Mike expressed his gratitude towards two local men who selflessly plunged into the water fully clothed to assist him. He remarked, “These two individuals fearlessly came to my aid without regard for their own safety.”
The 60-year-old added, “They each took an arm and pulled me to safety. In a swift moment, it was all over, and I found myself safe on the shore.”
Following the swim, Mike sustained minor injuries and was photographed with a head wound bleeding. He expressed his desire to locate the two heroic individuals to convey his gratitude for their life-saving intervention.
