A tragic incident unfolded as a conjoined twin passed away following a complex surgery to separate her from her sister. Aruna Rodrigues, who underwent the operation in Goiania, Brazil, in May, succumbed on Christmas Eve after a prolonged hospital stay. The procedure aimed to divide her from her sibling, Kiraz, who had died shortly after the surgery. Both twins, conjoined at the thorax, abdomen, and pelvis, were just 18 months old at the time of the operation.
Lead surgeon Zacharias Calil announced Aruna’s unfortunate demise on social media, expressing deep sorrow for the family’s loss. Aruna’s father, Alessandro Rodrigues, shared the heartbreaking news of her transfer from intensive care to a hospital ward before complications arose, leading to her passing. Despite initial signs of improvement and successful surgeries, Aruna’s health deteriorated, eventually succumbing to septic shock on December 24.
The medical team provided continuous care and support to Aruna and her family throughout her treatment. Following her passing, the hospital extended psychological assistance to the grieving family and requested privacy during this difficult period.
